4th of July LavaKids Liberty Fun Run
The inaugural 4th of July LavaKids Liberty Fun Run will be held July 4 before the start of the Kailua-Kona Independence Day parade on the parade route.
The 1-mile race starts at Big Island Honda; the half-mile at the north lawn of Hulihee Palace. Both races will end at Coconut Grove Marketplace volleyball court.
Admission for 5- to 16-year-olds is two cans of food to be donated to the Food Basket. Registration is at 5 p.m. at the race starts. The races are scheduled to begin at 5:50 p.m.
Prizes will be handed out for the most patriotic, and flags will be given to finishers. For more information, contact Gerry Rott at gerryrott@yahoo.com.
July 4 rodeo festival in Waimea
Parker Ranch will hold its 52nd annual July 4 Rodeo and Horse Races starting at 9 a.m. with a grand entry parade.
Events include the poo wai u, ranch mugging and team roping. There will be food trucks and keiki activities including pony rides and a petting zoo.

Special Olympics coaches needed
Special Olympics West Hawaii is looking for soccer coaches. Practices and games are underway at Old Kona Airport Park fields from 3-5 p.m. Tuesdays and Fridays. The season runs through Aug. 10.
Basketball coaches are also wanted for the Winter Games. The season runs from September through November.

Basketball clinics upcoming in Hilo
Former University of Hawaii at Hilo basketball player Aukai Wong will hold basketball clinics in Hilo from 5:45-7:45 p.m. on six Sundays — June 29; July 6, 13, 20, 27; and Aug. 3.
There are two divisions, one for intermediate boys and girls and another for high school boys and girls. One hour will be devoted to a study session with another on “intense” basketball drills.
T-shirts, drinks and snacks are included at each clinic.

Karate tourney July 12 in Hilo
The International Karate League will be host a Tournament of Champions from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. July 12 at Edith Kanakaole Multipurpose Stadium.
Marking the first IKL tournament in Hilo in 28 years, the event will welcome schools from the mainland and the islands.
The tournament is being hosted by Wilbur Mina of Keaau Dojo.
Admission is free.
Soccer tryouts
Kona Crush Soccer Academy will be holding open tryouts July 19 at Pualani Field. Tryouts will consist of two hourlong sessions with the head coach of the age group. Group times are: Under-8 coed, U-10 coed, U-11 boys, U-12 girls — 9-10 a.m. and 1-2 p.m.; U-13 boys, U-14 boys, U-14 girls — 10:15-11:15 a.m. and 2:15-3:15 p.m.; and U-16 boys, U-18 girls 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 3:30-4:30 p.m.

Vulcans offer baseball camps
The 2014 Vulcans Baseball Academy is underway till July 23 at the University of Hawaii at Hilo baseball field.
The 10-day academy is divided into four one-hour, age-group sessions. Time slots are 9:30–10:30 a.m. for ages 16-18, 10:45–11:45 a.m. for 11-12, 12:15–1:15 p.m. for 9-10, and 1:30–2:45 p.m. for 13-15. Each age group is limited to 12 participants.
Dates of the Academy are: June 25; July 1, 3, 7, 9, 14, 16, 21 and 23.

Yagi hoops camp in Hilo
The Department of Parks and Recreation will hold the Jimmy Yagi Summer Hoops Camp on July 21-24 in Hilo.
The camp, open to boys and girls ages 9-17, will be held at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium and the Panaewa Covered Play Courts.
Teenage campers will receive personalized instruction from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. daily. Full-court games are from 2 to 4 p.m.
Ages 9-12 will receive similar instruction from 9 a.m. to noon. Four-on-four games are at 1 and 3 p.m.
Early registration is $60 per child. The cost will rise to $70 after July 14. Participants will receive camp shirts and group photo.
Registration forms are available during business hours at the Department’s Recreation Division Office located within Aunty Sally Kaleohano’s Luau Hale at 799 Piilani St., Hilo, and online at hawaiicounty.gov/pr-recrea. Soccer camp at UH-Hilo
The University of Hawaii at Hilo will host a soccer camp July 21-24. Sessions for ages 7-10 are from 9 a.m. to noon, for 11 to 14 from 1-4 p.m.
The camp fee is $60. Registration deadline is July 18.

Free bowling for keiki
KBXtreme in Kailua-Kona is partnering with Kids Bowl Free, a national summer bowling program for children younger than 15, to allow two free games on weekdays.
This year, KBXtreme is nominating Big Island elementary and intermediate schools for the Bowling for Schools $50,000 grant program. The program runs to Aug. 31.

AYSO Region 527 and Team Soccer Direct are offering camps June 24-26 at Old Kona Airport Park. The day camp, for U-6 to -14, is 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The cost is $130.
The high school camp, for U-14 to -18, is 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The cost is $85.

20th annual King’s Swim
Kona Aquatics will host the 20th annual King’s Swim on July 5 at Kailua Bay.
The 1.2-mile course begins at Kailua Bay and ends at Kamakahonu Bay. No wetsuits or fins are permitted.
Applications are available at Bikeworks in Kona. A nonrefundable entry fee of $15 must accompany the application. The registration deadline is June 30. Late registration will be held at Kailua Pier from 6:30-7:30 a.m. on race day for $20.
Division awards will be presented to the top three finishers and prizes will be drawn throughout the postrace ceremonies.
Volunteers with kayaks, surfboards or standup paddleboards who volunteer for safety patrol are welcome; report to the pier before 7:30 a.m.

Registration for Hilo’s triathlon
Hilo’s first official triathlon will start at 7 a.m. July 13 at James Kealoha Beach Park.
The Olympic-distance race — 1.5-km swim, 40-km bike ride and 10-km run — is limited to 500 participants.
